Acantha was a nymph loved by the Greek God Apollo who was turned into a tree. Her name means "thorn" or "prickle".

Acanthus is a genus of prickly flowering plants native to the Mediterranean region that includes the ornamental species Acanthus mollis, commonly known as bear's breeches.
