African Names

The African names listed here come from many parts of Africa including Egypt, the source or many modern Pagan mystery traditions, and West Africa, the root of many modern Afro-American Pagan traditions, including Santeria, Umbanda and Voodoo. Whenever possible I have indicated the area or language group from whence the name derived.

Asha -Asha is a girl's name that appears in both India and Africa. In Sanskrit it means "hope" and in Swahili it means "life".

Ayize -Ayize is a boy's name from the Zulu language from South Africa. It means "hope comes".

Azalee -Azalee is a West African name from the Bini language. It means "singer".

Chitundu -This is an African name from the Kenya region and the Mwera language. It means "bird nest"

Eidi -Eidi is a girl's name of Swahili origin meaning "festival" or "feast day".

Hathor -Hathor is the name of the Egyptian Goddess of the hearth. The name means "House of Horus".

Heru -Heru is an ancient Egyptian name meaning "far away" "far above" or "distant one". It is the name of the ancient Egyptian hawk God and protector of the pharaoh better known in modern times by His Greek name Horus.

Horus -Horus is a boy's name of ancient Egyptian origin meaning "far away" or "distant one" or "far above". It is the Greek version of the name Heru.

Isis -Isis is the Egyptian Goddess of the Nile, rebirth and fertility. She is the wife of Osiris and mother of Horus. Here name means "woman of the throne".

Jomo -Jomo is a Kenyan name meaning "flaming spear".

Kanoni -Kanoni is a Swahili word referring to a specific type of small bird.

Nefertiti -Nefertiti is a woman's name from ancient Egypt meaning "The beautiful woman has come". Historically, Nefertiti was the chief wife of the pharaoh Akhenaten who was most famous for attempting to convert all of Egypt to the worship of a single God Aten.

Neith -Neith is an ancient Egyptian Goddess of war and hunting also associated with maidens and weaving. The name may mean "weaver"

Sekhmet -Sekhmet is an ancient Egyptian Goddess of war. She was often shown with the head of a lioness. The name means "powerful one".

Seth -Seth or Set is the Ancient Egyptian God of discord and destruction. He murdered his brother Osiris and fought with Horus for the throne of Egypt.

Tiaret -Tiaret is a name of African origin meaning "Lioness".

Zahur -Zahur is a Swahili and Arabic name meaning "blossom".
