Leander

The name Leander means "lion man". According to legend, Leander was a young man who loved a priestess of Aphrodite named Hero who dwelt in a tower on the other side of the Hellespont. Every night she put a candle in the window of her tower room and he swam the straight to see his lover and one night a great storm came up and her candle blew out. Leander lost his weight and drowned. Hero then threw herself into the Hellespont.
