About the name Dahlia

The dahlia is a type of flower in the aster family. It is the national flower of Mexico and popular in gardens all over the world. The Aztecs raised and wildcrafted various species of dahlia for its edible tubers, as medicine and for its hollow stems which were used for water pipes. The Dahlia is named for the Swedish botanist Anders Dahl. The name Dahl sounds like the Swedish word for "valley" so Dahlia may mean something like "valley flower".

The Toltecs called it "Chichipatl" and the Aztecs called it "Cocoxochitl". These mean something like "hollow stem flower" or "water pipe flower"
