Niobe was a queen of Thebes who had fourteen beautiful children, seven boys and seven girls. In an ancient version of Mommy wars, she boasted that she was more worthy of worship than Latona (or Leto) because she had more children. Leto then sent her own children, Apollo and Artemis (or Diana) to slay all of Niobe's children. Niobe was so overcome with sorrow that she turned to stone, but the stone continued weeping forever after. Niobe is often mentioned in literature as the epitome of sorrow or loneliness. The name Niobe may mean "fern".
