About the name Orion
Orion, the hunter is a constellation that is best viewed in winter. Greek myth says he was the best hunter of his time and beloved of either Artemis or Eos (or both). He was killed by either Gaia or Apollo or perhaps Artemis either with an arrow or by Scorpion sting. Indeed the constellation Scorpio follows him across the sky where he is also accompanied by his trusty hunting dogs Canis Minor and Canis Major, which contains the dog star Sirius.
The name Orion comes from words for "Gold" and "Rising" and may be associated with the sunrise. It may be derived from Akkadian Uru anna meaning "light of heaven" or possibly the Greek horion meaning "boundary".
