About the name Sabine

The Sabines were Italic neighbors of Rome. When Romulus founded Rome, there were not enough women for his men to marry. The Sabines refused to allow their daughters to marry Roman men, so Romulus and his men abducted Sabine women through trickery. In the battle that followed, the women begged their new husbands and fathers to cease fighting and behave like they were family. So a large group of Sabine people became part of Rome.
