Olivia is a female name derived from the word olive. The Olive tree is sacred to the Greeks. It was a gift to the Atheneans from Athene. William Shakespeare is credited with inventing the name Olivia for the heroine in his play "Twelfth Night". The name Olivia may also be considered a feminine form of Oliver meaning "elf army".
